American Veteran 01

Frederick M. Cole

July 4, 1931 ~ January 22, 2022 (age 90)

Dr. Frederick M. Cole, of Lynn, beloved husband of 67 years to Marilyn (Martel) Cole, died on 22 January 2022 at the age of 90 surrounded by family. A life-long resident of Lynn, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Muckian Cole.

After graduation from St Mary’s High School and Boston College, he was commissioned as a 2ndLt in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as an Infantry Platoon Commander during the Korean War. After his military service, he went on to receive a Master’s Degree from Salem State College and Doctorate Degree from Boston University in the field of education, where he would spend the next sixty years. Not content with retirement, he continued to work as the Director of Community Relations for Atlanticare in Lynn and as the Executive Director for the Lynn Business Education Foundation into his 80’s.

Fred loved the City of Lynn and was active in local community and civic affairs, volunteering on numerous boards and organizations. Over the years, he was recognized as Man of the Year by the Spanish American Association, Minority Cultural Center, Greater Lynn Mental Health Association, Lynn Hispanic Association and received the Community Leadership Award from Operation Bootstrap Adult Education Center. He was named Irishman of the Year by the Friendly Knights of St. Patrick and was inducted into the St. Mary’s High School Hall of Fame.

As the beloved patriarch of the Cole family, the most important part of Fred’s life was the role and influence he had in the lives of his extended family. He was happiest surrounded by his family and friends at sporting events, school activities, church events, backyard cookouts, holiday gatherings and family outings. He enjoyed talking about growing up in Lynn, his days as a teacher and principal, and telling stories about the old Corps. He was a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston College and was never without his Golden Eagle pin.

In addition to his wife Marilyn, Fred is survived by his daughter Cathleen Cole-Adams and her husband William; sons Joseph Cole and his wife Susan, Kevin Cole and his wife Leslie, Christopher Cole and his wife Ellen, and Terence Cole; his sister Josephine Hayduk; and his 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Edward Cole and his sister Rosemary Costin.
